Creating a Life Strategy for Fulfillment and Success

Chapter 1: The Importance of a Life Strategy
Many individuals overlook the significance of formulating a life strategy. While they may have aspirations or long-term goals, they often lack a structured plan to achieve them. In a corporate environment, suggesting that a business operate without a strategy would be met with skepticism. Successful leaders understand the necessity of strategic focus to achieve desired outcomes. Similarly, neglecting to adopt a strategy in your personal life can lead to aimlessness.
As Lewis Carroll famously said, "If you don't know where you are going, any road can take you there."
For many, envisioning their future feels daunting; contemplating where they might be in five or ten years can seem overly ambitious. Personally, I do not have a detailed five- or ten-year plan. However, the crucial aspect is not merely selecting a single destination but gaining clarity on your goals, values, and sources of motivation. Understanding what drives you will naturally lead to the creation of a strategy that aligns with these elements.
A relevant article from Harvard Business Review, titled "Use Strategic Thinking to Create the Life You Want," serves as a guide for incorporating business strategy principles into personal life planning.
According to the article, many individuals feel lost and lack purpose, often relying on gut feelings and emotions. In contrast, organizations strategically navigate their objectives. This business-oriented approach can also be effectively applied to personal life.
"Just as corporate strategy is an integrated set of choices that positions a company to win, life strategy is an integrated set of choices that positions a person to live a great life." — HBR
The article introduces the PERMA-V model, rooted in positive psychology, which outlines a comprehensive approach to leading a fulfilling life. The acronym represents six fundamental components that collectively contribute to the pursuit of happiness.
Model Aspects
- Positive Emotions: Experiencing feelings of happiness, confidence, and satisfaction consistently contributes to overall well-being. This pursuit of happiness is a common goal for many individuals.
- Engagement: Cultivating interests that captivate and inspire growth is essential. For some, this may be their career, while for others, it might involve hobbies or passions that induce a state of flow.
- Relationships: Establishing deep connections across various relationships fosters a sense of safety and community. In "How Will You Measure Your Life?" Clayton Christensen emphasizes the importance of nurturing relationships amidst our busy lives.
- Meaning: Pursuing goals that extend beyond our own lives can provide significant purpose. Many find meaning in their careers, while others discover it through volunteering and personal projects.
- Achievement: Feeling accomplished in different areas of life, including work and relationships, contributes to overall satisfaction. Celebrating small victories can enhance this sense of achievement.
- Vitality: Prioritizing physical health through regular exercise and adequate rest is crucial for well-being. This element underscores the importance of maintaining health as part of a fulfilling life.
Incorporating Strategy into the PERMA-V Model
To effectively implement each aspect, it's essential to set SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For instance, "I aim to write and publish a fictional novel before Christmas."
Equally important is outlining a plan for achieving these goals: "I will write 500 words daily until the manuscript is complete, then seek out a publisher."
The "how" of achieving goals provides both accountability and clarity. A strategy helps bridge the gap between intentions and actions, enabling individuals to stay on track.
For example, regarding the vitality aspect, one might set a goal: "In the next 12 months, I will complete a marathon." While this is a clear and ambitious target, defining the steps needed to reach it is crucial.
I plan to visit the gym two to three times weekly to build strength and maintain my training regimen, ensuring I attend at least 80% of my scheduled sessions throughout the year. This structured approach provides both accountability and a clear pathway to success.
Embracing the Journey
Achieving your goals will require time, patience, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. Regularly revisiting and adjusting your PERMA-V components ensures alignment with your values and objectives.
I anticipate needing to pivot throughout this process. As long as my foundational principles remain aligned with my personal values and purpose, I have the flexibility to adapt and redefine my life strategy as necessary.
"A well-designed life is a life that is generative — it is constantly creative, productive, changing, evolving, and there is always the possibility of surprise." — Designing Your Life (Bill Burnett & Dave Evans)
