Chapter 1: Introduction to tvOS 16.1
The latest release of tvOS, version 16.1, brings a host of new features that enhance the user experience on Apple TV. Here’s a detailed look at what’s new and exciting.
Section 1.1: Enhanced Siri Experience
One of the most noticeable changes in tvOS 16.1 is the revamped Siri interface. Unlike its predecessor, this version features a more compact design, allowing Siri to emerge from the bottom-right corner of the screen, taking up less visual space. Additionally, Siri now animates while you speak, similar to the functionality available on iOS devices.
To interact with Siri, users have two options:
- Press and hold the microphone button 🎙️ on the Apple TV remote while speaking.
- Tap the microphone button once to activate Siri, and continue speaking until you finish your command. You can press it again to stop Siri from waiting for additional input.
Section 1.2: Voice Recognition for AirPods Users
Previously, if you asked Siri, "What's my name?" on Apple TV, the response would be, "I can't recognize voices on Apple TV..." Fortunately, that has changed. Now, when using AirPods, Siri can identify different users' voices, allowing for personalized responses based on individual preferences. This means easier access to your favorite shows, music, and games, along with the ability to resume watching from where you left off.
A helpful tip: Ask Siri, "What should I watch?" to receive customized recommendations tailored just for you. Additionally, activating Siri with "Hey Siri" is now possible, but only when using AirPods, as the Apple TV lacks built-in microphones. To enable this feature, navigate to Settings ⚙️ > General ⚙️ > Siri, and toggle 'Listen for "Hey Siri" on AirPods'.
Section 1.3: Apple Fitness+ Without an Apple Watch
Another significant update in tvOS 16.1 is the ability to access Apple Fitness+ without requiring an Apple Watch. Users can now subscribe to the service using just an iPhone with iOS 16.1 or later. This is particularly beneficial for those who do not own an Apple Watch but still want to participate in live workouts via Apple TV. However, keep in mind that without an Apple Watch, you won’t be able to monitor your live fitness metrics.
Section 1.4: HDR10+ Support
Apple has introduced HDR10+ support in tvOS 16.1, which was initially marketed as a feature exclusive to the 3rd Generation Apple TV 4K. Thankfully, it is also compatible with the 2nd Generation Apple TV box. Simply update your device to tvOS 16.1 to enjoy this feature.
Additional Features
tvOS 16.1 also brings the iCloud Shared Photo Library to Apple TV, allowing users to view photos from all participants, though you cannot take photos directly. Furthermore, the new Smart Home standard, Matter, is now supported by Apple TV, enhancing its functionality in smart home integration.
