Exploring Intuition and Mathematics: A New Perspective

Chapter 1: The Essence of Intuition
“Intuition is a feeling into things that comes to answers and leaves no trail.” - Terence McKenna

In our daily lives, even those who view themselves as lacking intuition rely on it to navigate experiences. Intuition serves as a form of holistic processing, blending our immediate perceptions with deeper insights, guiding us toward our objectives.
Despite my struggles with mathematics—ranging from my challenges with long division in school to my attempts at adjusting recipe ratios as an adult—I've come to recognize the significant role math plays in articulating our intuitive understanding of the world.
Today, the academic world has glorified mathematics to a point where it's often treated as an absolute necessity for interpreting the complexities of our existence. However, I believe that mathematics, in its unadulterated form, beautifully reflects our intuitive capabilities, often in surprising ways.
Before readers abandon the topic at the mention of math, let me clarify my stance with another insightful quote from McKenna:
“Mathematics is an intuitional activity — an intuitional activity describing nature — without the intercession of inductive science. Inductive science is a naïve remnant of Greek-Democratean theories, where everything is seen as clearly understandable and operating under known laws."
He further argues that the true essence of nature is not merely captured through data collection and measurement. Instead, it emerges from our imaginative processes, where we explore the unique mathematical constructs that arise from human creativity and technological innovation.
Unleash The Power Of Intuition in Business
This video delves into how intuition can be harnessed in various aspects of life, especially in business settings, highlighting the transformative power of intuitive thinking.
As McKenna points out, mathematics is often misused within science, which tends to reduce it to a tool for validation rather than a medium for true understanding. The true value of mathematics lies in its potential to describe the intricate relationships and systems we encounter in reality.
One insightful writer, John Brodix Merryman Jr., noted, “Math will always be tricky. Like any form of mapping, it’s hard to tell where the line between accuracy and fantasy creeps in.”
The issue, then, is not with mathematics itself but rather with how we apply it. Science often fails to capture the richness of human experience, leading to oversimplified models that overlook vital nuances.
“It must be that the unaided human mind is more capable of correctly modeling nature than the human mind that works through the methodological inductive approach called science…” McKenna emphasizes, pointing out that scientific descriptions often miss the essence of phenomena, leaving behind the individuality and unique characteristics that define our experiences.
The core message here is that while science employs certain validation frameworks, these can sometimes obscure our understanding of reality. The pursuit of knowledge should not be limited to rigid frameworks of what we can validate or measure.
So, how should we approach this uncertainty? Ideally, we should embrace the unknown and leverage our imaginations. History shows us that groundbreaking advancements—like Dirac’s theories on anti-matter, Tesla’s innovations with alternating currents, or Maxwell’s work in electromagnetism—were born from intuitive leaps, often facing skepticism before gaining recognition.
We must remain open to unconventional ideas and not let our beliefs stifle our imaginative capacities. The importance of open-mindedness extends beyond societal norms; it is crucial for genuine intellectual exploration.
Our imaginations are powerful tools, and confining them to the boundaries of established systems can hinder our growth and understanding.
