Exploring the Role of Common Sense in AI Development

Chapter 1: The Necessity of Common Sense in AI
The question of whether artificial intelligence should be equipped with common sense is increasingly relevant. In our modern world, AI has taken on a dominant role, often acting as the primary decision-maker rather than merely a supportive tool.

In the United States, every employed citizen is required to file annual tax returns. Those who fail to do so face severe penalties, including hefty fines and potential imprisonment. Most individuals strive to adhere to these regulations, utilizing common sense to navigate the complexities of tax law.
After a modest income in 2022, I asked my daughter for assistance with my 2023 tax filings. She informed me that I owed money to the IRS, which I accepted, knowing I had three years to file my returns.
A more prosperous 2023 prompted me to enlist my son's help with my tax return, and everything proceeded smoothly. I also decided to address my 2022 taxes. My son researched and confirmed I could file without incurring penalties until late 2025.
The IRS has established guidelines for late filings, but it appears that some individuals are even submitting tax returns for deceased relatives.
"Really?" I questioned my son during this discussion. "I need to prove I'm alive?"
"Yes, and you'll have to acquire an 'IP PIN,'" he responded.
"But I just submitted my 2023 return a week ago, and I received a confirmation from the Federal Tax Office," I reminded him.
"That’s correct," he agreed.
"Shouldn't their system recognize this?" I inquired. "Isn't there communication between their databases?"
"I think so too," my son replied. "Once your data is entered, there should be a connection linking your account to all previous filings."
"What's happening then?" I asked, perhaps in the wrong company. "This feels like something from a developing country."
"I recently read that the U.S. system mirrors some practices typical of Third World nations," my son noted.
"But that’s hardly a compliment," I said, recalling the frustrations I've faced due to inefficiencies and incompetence over the years in my own country. "What on earth is going on?"
"I’m not sure, but it seems like they're utilizing a batch processing method," my son explained.
"Or perhaps someone isn't fulfilling their responsibilities," I said, reflecting on the widespread incompetence I've encountered, which has eroded trust in various institutions back home.
"Due to increasing scams and cyber threats, the IRS has implemented stringent measures to ensure everyone's safety," he attempted to clarify.
We navigated the process of submitting my documents and even performed a video selfie verification. Everything initially appeared successful until they noted that the phone number on file didn't belong to me. With both my sons sharing the same last name, my son's name was tied to me as a dependent. A person with common sense would have made the necessary connections, thus saving us valuable time. Ultimately, my application was denied despite my Social Security number and other documentation, forcing us to resort to filing by mail—a process that feels archaic in today's digital age.
In an era where AI should take charge, can we truly teach machines to apply common sense?
Having grown up in a financially challenged country where education was undervalued, many of us acquired degrees in practical wisdom. We learned the essence of common sense long before we could read. This foundational understanding requires deep thought—an exercise for our minds that, while time-consuming, ultimately proves beneficial.
This wisdom benefits everyone and imparts valuable lessons.
AI may lead the way, but it does so as humans become increasingly reliant on technology. When we depend on inadequately trained machines devoid of common sense, creativity, empathy, and emotional intelligence, what repercussions might we face?
Are we aware that we might be orchestrating our own downfall while also jeopardizing others?
With common sense, we can enhance our decision-making processes, curbing the influence of greed and power while fostering unity.
If your heart could communicate, what messages would it convey? Common sense is an invaluable asset, and humanity must learn to integrate it into our daily choices—consider it as essential as water.

Chapter 2: The Impact of AI on Decision-Making
In this chapter, we further explore the implications of relying on AI for critical decision-making processes and the potential consequences of neglecting common sense.
The first video, "Level Up Your PD With Our New 'AI Foundations' Course! | Monday Morning Momentum," discusses how foundational AI courses can enhance professional development and understanding of common sense in AI.
The second video, "#ScotAI24 Common Sense Education: AI Literacy," emphasizes the importance of AI literacy and the integration of common sense in AI education.
