Exploring the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6: Is It the Right Choice?

Chapter 1: A New Experience with the Galaxy Z Fold6
I never anticipated that I would embrace a foldable phone. Though I’ve always found them intriguing and noted their dedicated fan base, the notion of using one daily felt a bit over the top. However, 2024 has been the year of experimentation for me, prompting my full-time use of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 since it landed last month.
Previously, I was an iPhone user. As expected, there are aspects I appreciate about the Z Fold6, as well as some features that leave me wanting. The pressing question remains: will I make this transition permanent?
What I Appreciate About the Z Fold6
Surprisingly, I find myself enjoying the cover display on the Z Fold6. It’s a bold statement, especially given my earlier critiques. My previous complaints centered around the narrow front displays of earlier models, which seemed only suitable for mindless scrolling. The current iteration has a slightly larger cover screen, making a noticeable difference.
Moreover, I’ve discovered that its compactness makes it an excellent one-handed device, a characteristic I hadn’t experienced since the iPhone 13 mini. Carrying it around is also incredibly satisfying, and it feels great to hold during calls. Just a tip: be sure to swap out the Samsung keyboard for Google’s Gboard for a better typing experience.
The flexibility of switching to the expansive internal display is one of the Z Fold6's standout features. While on a press trip in China, this spacious screen has proven invaluable for productivity on the go, especially in confined spaces during press conferences.
This brings me to a key reason I’m enjoying the Z Fold6: it offers a refreshing change. After reaching peak smartphone design a few years back, brands have been scrambling to innovate beyond the endless stream of AI features. The unique form factor of foldables naturally draws attention, and the more I interact with it, the more I appreciate it.
What I Find Disappointing About the Z Fold6
However, not everything about the Z Fold6 is perfect. The combination of a large internal display and a practical cover display leads to frequent attempts to access the internal screen, even when it's not necessary.
Additionally, some applications still fail to take full advantage of the larger display, which can be frustrating. For instance, when I launch the BBC News app, it merely stretches to fit the screen, rather than optimizing the experience.
Two primary concerns for me are the battery life and camera quality. The battery doesn't quite meet flagship standards, which can be frustrating given that it powers two displays. Meanwhile, the camera system lacks the optical capabilities and quality found in the S24 Ultra, making it a less-than-ideal choice for content creation.
There are also minor annoyances. The Z Fold6 remains prohibitively expensive, and its dual displays and hinge make it feel delicate, requiring careful handling. This is definitely not a device for kids; handing it to my two-year-old for a quick distraction could lead to costly mishaps.
In a market filled with increasingly sleek and durable competitors, the Z Fold6 appears somewhat outdated. Samsung will need to implement significant design improvements in the next iteration.
Will I Continue with the Z Fold6?
Now, the pivotal question: will I continue using the Z Fold6?
The upcoming iPhone 16 launch event on September 9 is on my mind. Having been an iPhone user for about a decade, I’m aware that while I don’t miss my previous device daily, the arrival of a new model will inevitably draw my attention.
Which device will ultimately capture my loyalty? Stay tuned for updates!
