Finding True Happiness Through Spiritual Growth and Recovery

Chapter 1: Embracing Your Journey to Joy
To truly engage with your recovery program, focus on taking the next right step.
The path to being Happy, Joyous, and Free is illuminated by your personal journey. While I cannot prescribe a method for you, I can share my own experiences. My ultimate hope is that you will find your own happiness and freedom.
In the past, I struggled to find joy. My life was filled with anger and violence, fueled by alcohol. I felt trapped in a cycle of despair, with no vision of a better future.
When confronted with differing opinions, my instinct was to react with anger. I built walls around myself, responding to every challenge with hostility. This cycle perpetuated my self-loathing and led me to harm others, only to feel guilty and remorseful, which drove me back to drinking.
This behavior left me in a constant state of fear and hopelessness, unaware that my alcoholism was at the root of my struggles. I didn’t recognize myself as an alcoholic until I joined Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Initially, my motivations for attending meetings weren’t aligned with the program's true purpose.
At almost every AA meeting, we would read "How it Works." The second paragraph struck me: “If you desire what we possess and are prepared to go to any lengths to attain it, then come on down.” I was intrigued by the idea of a spiritual program, despite not identifying as religious.
I could see the peace and serenity in the faces of other members, and I yearned for that experience. I was willing to do whatever it took to achieve that tranquility. The advice to "Fake it ‘til you make it" resonated with me. By acting “as if,” I experienced immediate, albeit small, relief.
Continuing this practice led to significant improvements in my life. I explored spirituality more deeply, guided by my sponsors who emphasized its importance in the program.
I gathered insights from Emmet Fox, who was known to be a spiritual guide for many early AA members. His work, particularly his interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount, became a crucial resource for me, as it was seen as a foundational text for the program.
As I embraced these teachings, I noticed a remarkable shift. My anger and frustration began to dissipate, and I started to grow into a better version of myself.
The benefits were apparent almost immediately. I was achieving a state of being Happy, Joyous, and Free, and I found that maintaining this state depended on my commitment to my program.
Ultimately, I discovered that through consistent effort in my recovery, I could experience true Serenity. Before AA, I felt morally, spiritually, and physically bankrupt. Now, I am spiritually fulfilled.
The wonderful truth is that anyone can achieve this, regardless of their current situation. By diligently working your program every day, you too can find peace and joy. So, take that step—JUST DO IT—and share your journey with me! Thank you, God!
