Discovering Life Beyond My Smartphone: A 60-Hour Journey

Chapter 1: The Unplanned Digital Detox
It was a typical Friday as I returned from a visit with my parents, packing my essentials, including my laptop and smartphone charger. However, once I got home, I realized that my smartphone was running low on battery, and to my dismay, I couldn't find my charger. It suddenly hit me that I had left it behind.
I ordered a new charger online, but in the meantime, I found myself without a smartphone.
This unexpected situation turned out to be a unique opportunity to experience life without constant digital interruptions.
Section 1.1: The Impact of Digital Disconnection
That evening, we hosted a beer and cheese pairing event with 25 guests. When a food-related query arose that my colleague couldn't address, he asked me to look it up. I explained that I didn’t have my smartphone as I was undergoing a digital detox—albeit not by choice.
This moment opened my eyes to how deeply ingrained smartphones are in our daily routines. A guest in her twenties overheard and complimented my detox effort, which filled me with unexpected pride.
After the event, while tidying up and doing dishes, I realized that my lack of phone usage allowed me to concentrate better and stay organized. The absence of the usual phone checks alleviated the pressure I often felt, leading to a surprising reduction in stress.

Section 1.2: Confronting My Phone Addiction
Once I returned home, I anticipated a flood of unread messages, but to my surprise, WhatsApp on my laptop had none. This rare moment of calm made me aware of my Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). Had I truly become so attached to my phone without realizing it?
Chapter 2: Rediscovering Reality
The following day, I attended an event with friends, still without my charger. When I mentioned my lack of a smartphone, their reactions ranged from disbelief to concern. I explained the situation, framing it positively: if my phone had still been functional, I likely wouldn't have opted to leave it behind.
I recognized how this enforced disconnection allowed me to fully engage with my friends, enjoying their company without the distraction of screens. Social gatherings had often found me lost in my phone, detracting from the moments I could have cherished.

Final Thoughts: A New Perspective
Even with a spare charger now at hand, my phone remains off. I've discovered that I genuinely appreciate this time away from it. Just three days into this experience, I can't help but imagine the potential benefits of extending it for a month or longer.
While completely avoiding smartphones is unrealistic given our reliance on them, we can certainly control how we choose to use them. I plan to actively resist the urge to reach for my phone during social occasions, opting instead to connect with those around me.
I did check WhatsApp on my laptop during my detox, and I don't see that as an issue. The true distractions lie within social media apps like Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat, which encourage mindless scrolling. Consider all the productive activities that could fill that time: reading, learning a new skill, working on a side project, or meditating. The options are limitless.
To clarify, smartphones themselves aren't inherently harmful; it's our choices in using them that can turn technology into a source of distraction.
Let's strive for more meaningful eye contact with people rather than our screens.
Cheers, Jerome
