Navigating the Journey of Entrepreneurship: A Personal Experience

Written on

Chapter 1: The Beginnings of My Entrepreneurial Journey

I recently took part in an entrepreneurship program where students collaborate in teams to develop their ideas and compete for the attention of investors and venture capitalists. For those familiar with the show Shark Tank, the competitive aspect of this program is quite similar—participants pitch their concepts in hopes of securing a deal.

Starting a business is far more challenging than I initially believed. Beyond crafting business models and determining the most viable markets, I still depend on autocorrect to spell "entrepreneur." However, the program was an invaluable learning opportunity. I connected with numerous individuals, including Douglass Raggio and Mark Bowles, and gained insights into business operations, pitch creation, and market exploration, sparking a newfound interest in these areas.

The highlight of the program for me was the chance to transform my ideas into reality. I am naturally inclined to think creatively; I enjoy brainstorming solutions to various problems. I find that allowing my mind to wander often leads to deeper reflections and new insights drawn from my past experiences. My original ideas tend to emerge when I look inward rather than relying solely on external inspiration. A few years back, I conceptualized a method to convert plastic into energy. While it remains a daunting task requiring substantial research and funding, my teammates were intrigued when I shared this vision, and even the program directors expressed enthusiasm.

Throughout the program, we participated in two competitions where we presented our pitch decks. For those unfamiliar, a pitch deck is a concise presentation designed to inform judges and potential investors about our company and objectives. My team managed to win one of the competitions. However, I faced a setback during the program when I decided to take a month-long trip to India. This decision meant I not only missed the program but also skipped school and my AP Exams, a choice I now somewhat regret, as it put me at risk of falling behind in my studies.

Upon my return, I had to quickly reschedule my final exams and catch up on coursework to avoid jeopardizing my high school graduation. Consequently, I could not dedicate as much time to our business venture as I wanted, missing out on a trip to the Bay Area, a practice competition, and several influential guest speakers. The day I returned coincided with the final competition, where the winning team would advance to the global rounds. To my surprise, we won, securing two weeks to prepare for the global competition. Yet, we faced challenges, including poor communication from one teammate and uncertainty about our pitch's direction. On top of that, I contracted Covid on the day of the competition, complicating my ability to present. Despite these obstacles, our efforts paid off—we received the award for Best Elevator Pitch and were named First Runner-Up, finishing second among 24 global teams. I was thrilled with the outcome and grateful for the experience.

However, triumphs often come with their share of challenges. This journey taught me several crucial lessons.

Section 1.1: The Importance of Communication

Effective communication is vital for teamwork. When my teammates and I met at a local café, conversations flowed easily, and we even enjoyed watching Indian music videos for a portion of our meeting. In contrast, when we worked remotely, maintaining communication proved challenging. There were instances where a team member would not respond, which hindered our progress and made it difficult to stay aligned with our goals. One teammate's lack of communication created stress for another teammate just a week before the global competition.

Conversely, another teammate was highly communicative. Initially, I found the constant messaging overwhelming; it felt stressful to keep up with the barrage of messages. This was a stark contrast to my other teammate's silence. Over time, I came to appreciate her diligence—she was serious about winning and put forth significant effort. I realized that excessive communication was far better than none at all.

Subsection 1.1.1: Building Confidence

I often struggled with self-doubt, questioning the validity of my ideas. There were numerous moments when I felt like a small voice with grand concepts. Even when I believed my idea had merit, I worried about how to bring it to fruition. The concept of transforming plastic into energy, although compelling in theory, posed significant challenges in execution and would require vast funding for research and development. My teammates reassured me that a working prototype was not necessary for the competition; understanding the business side was more critical.

Despite this encouragement, I felt insecure about my knowledge in the field. Although I had some experience as a lab intern, I lacked a deep understanding of plastics and the technical aspects of my idea. I also had limited experience in business, with my internship at a startup being my only exposure. When it came time to present my idea, I struggled to project confidence, speaking softly and hesitantly. Thus, building my self-assurance and conveying that confidence during presentations became a priority.

By the final competition, I had transformed. Despite being the shortest member of the team, my voice resonated clearly and confidently as I presented my segment of the pitch deck. One of my teammates later shared that she had initially worried about my performance but was thrilled with how I stepped up.

Overall, while there were significant hurdles, this experience proved to be immensely rewarding. I gained valuable insights not only about entrepreneurship but also about myself.
