A Proud Moment: Honoring Scientists During the Pandemic

Written on

Chapter 1: Acknowledging Scientific Bravery

In a notable recognition, Professor Salim Abdool Karim and Dr. Anthony Fauci have been jointly awarded the Maddox Prize for 2020. This prestigious award honors individuals who have bravely defended science amidst adversity.

Scientists honored for their contributions during Covid-19

The Maddox Prize is a collaborative effort between the charity Sense about Science and the renowned scientific journal Nature. Since its inception in 2012, it has celebrated researchers who exemplify courage and integrity in advocating for scientific reasoning against significant opposition.

Who is Professor Karim?

Professor Karim is South Africa's equivalent of Dr. Anthony Fauci, embodying a science-based approach to public health. As an infectious disease epidemiologist and director of the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research, he also leads the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Covid-19.

“His talent for simplifying complex epidemiological concepts into relatable narratives has been vital in fostering trust and encouraging active citizenship as we united against COVID-19,” noted the Ministry of Health.

When South Africa entered strict lockdown on March 27, fear engulfed me. However, during a comprehensive public briefing on April 14, Professor Karim elucidated the science behind Covid-19, diminishing my anxiety. He spoke truthfully, much like Dr. Fauci has in the U.S.

Both scientists share a common thread in their careers. Dr. Fauci managed the U.S. government's medical response to the AIDS crisis over thirty years ago while Professor Karim was among the voices opposing AIDS denialism.

The delays in providing anti-retroviral treatments by former President Thabo Mbeki led to over 300,000 preventable deaths, as highlighted by independent research. Thankfully, our current First Lady, a qualified doctor and Harvard alumna, brings a wealth of knowledge to health policies.

Unlike the past, when quack remedies were endorsed, Professor Karim operates under a supportive administration, contrasting with Dr. Fauci's experiences of defending the truth amid a lack of backing.

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to both of these esteemed scientists!

The first video titled "Why don't I like people being proud of me?" explores the complexities of self-acceptance and societal expectations, shedding light on the emotional dynamics involved.

Miraculous Collaborations in Science

Professor Jonathan D. Jansen, President of the Academy of Science of South Africa, eloquently expressed the significance of the Maddox Prize winners: “Fauci and Karim symbolize a powerful collaboration between the Global North and South. Their partnership demonstrates the vital research that combats global health threats. Amidst increasing inequalities, their work serves as an inspiring example of what can be achieved through unity.”

I hope pharmaceutical companies embrace this spirit and collaborate on Covid vaccines, prioritizing humanity over profit. Low and middle-income nations are eagerly awaiting a breakthrough!

Trusting Science: A Crucial Reminder

A common phrase circulating is that "the vaccine is not a magic bullet." As anticipation for the vaccine rollout grows, it’s essential to remember that true safety won’t be achieved until 60-70% of the global population is vaccinated.

Recently, the UK identified a new virus strain that spreads more rapidly than earlier variants. The World Health Organization confirmed similar mutations in the Netherlands, Denmark, and Australia.

On December 19, South African genomics experts announced a new variant reported to the WHO, contributing to a surge in cases, particularly among younger individuals without pre-existing health conditions.

“We are still uncovering the origins and implications of this variant,” remarked Professor Karim. “We first identified it in Nelson Mandela Bay, but we cannot confirm its origin at this time. Its severity is still uncertain.”

The best course of action remains to adhere to non-pharmaceutical interventions: wearing masks, practicing hand hygiene, and maintaining social distance.

(Recently, I received misleading health information about COVID-19 via WhatsApp. While I refrained from being harsh in my response, it was imperative to halt the spread of misinformation.)

Rely on verified scientific sources!

In Conclusion

I take immense pride in having such distinguished scientists who prioritize truth. While it’s natural to feel frustrated and anxious for a resolution, especially when missing loved ones during the holidays, let’s reflect on the significance of giving:

“Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide-open heart that thinks of others first.” — George Matthew Adams.

Stay safe, stay united, and thank you for your support.
