Numerous people can gain from this introspective journey, especially if they struggled with self-acceptance during their formative years. This exercise is particularly beneficial for those who:

  • Felt uncomfortable in their skin at certain ages.
  • Wish their younger selves had embraced their uniqueness.
  • Regret past behaviors or choices.

Begin by envisioning a comfortable room in your mind, inviting the younger version of yourself you wish to connect with. It’s crucial to communicate with this younger self using compassion and warmth.

What does this younger version of you need to hear?

This inquiry can be transformative. Here’s a personal narrative that illustrates its impact:

During my school years, I faced academic challenges and was placed in the bottom class, which left me feeling devastated. This experience led me to internalize the belief that I was not intelligent. Although I worked hard to improve my standing the following year, the damage was already done; I felt labeled as “one of the stupid kids.”

Ironically, as I grew older, my love for learning blossomed. Now at 52, I thrive on knowledge acquisition, recognizing that traditional schooling wasn’t suited to my learning style.

However, that younger self who felt inadequate lingered within me for years. To address this, I practiced the exercise I’m sharing here. I envisioned hugging my younger self, reassuring her that everything would be okay. I emphasized that school was merely a small chapter in her life and did not define her intelligence or future success. I expressed my love for her creativity and imagination, concluding our moment with another embrace and a smile.

The sense of healing that washed over me was incredible. The limiting beliefs that had been buried for so long began to shift positively.

I encourage you to try this exercise for yourself. I believe it can be an incredibly empowering experience.
