Redefining Success: A Journey to Authentic Living

Written on

Chapter 1: The Misconception of Success

Have you ever observed exceptionally successful individuals and felt compelled to look beyond the superficial labels attached to them? Let me share a truth: success is not what you might think it is. Successful people don’t necessarily drape themselves in luxury brands like Chanel or Prada. From a young age, we've been conditioned to believe that success elevates you to an exclusive club of the top 1%.

Social media influencers, or so-called 'mentors,' have ingrained in us the notion that success equates to overcoming personal and professional struggles, achieving more than others, and flaunting wealth through extravagant purchases. If you can’t afford Chanel in this lifetime, has your life been wasted? Just look at those who, despite less privilege, have made it into that coveted 1%—and there you are, feeling a sense of shame.

This mindset can lead you to force yourself into believing that you must do 'more.' Consequently, you may find yourself hustling endlessly, neglecting rest, and ultimately forgetting why you began your journey in the first place. While you think you’re on the path to success, you may actually be laying the groundwork for declining mental health.

Section 1.1: What Is Success, Then?

I once found myself in the trap of constant comparison. I recall nearly six or seven years ago, as I was about to enter college, my cousin was set to start at the same time. We were attending universities in the same city, albeit in different fields. On that day, one of my aunts remarked, "Both are going to college at the same time; let’s see who turns out better."

That single statement prevented me from enjoying my college life. I was always striving to outdo my cousin, seeking internships and additional courses. But looking back, I realize that while I was racing to surpass my cousin, I had no clear idea of what I truly wanted. I was driven by fear.

The fear of 'not being successful' loomed large, making it impossible for me to sit quietly and reflect. This struggle persisted until 2021, when I was introduced to the concept of intentional living. It dawned on me that you can achieve your goals without rushing or fearing the outcome. You have the power to choose the life you want to live.

I can’t adequately describe how my life transformed since then. Now, I have more than I could ever need, working less than three hours a day. Some days, I don’t work at all. How did this happen?

Section 1.2: Defining Success for Yourself

I’m not advocating for a 'not working hard' philosophy, as I understand many people don’t have the luxury to slow down. But if you're reading this, there’s a good chance you’re unhappy with your current life. Think about it: you only live once.

The world is a beautiful place. Do you really want to spend your days filled with complaints and negativity? I urge you to forget everything you've been taught about success. Let go of insecurities and fears that might be holding you back. Take a moment to breathe and ask yourself, "What kind of life do I truly want?"

Imagine a life where you feel free and fulfilled. For instance, back in 2021, I was so frustrated with my job that I dreaded waking up in the mornings. I wished for the nights to stretch on endlessly just to avoid facing my boss. I asked myself, "What do I truly desire?"

The answer was clear: I love writing and want to pursue it, but I couldn’t stand my job. I wanted the freedom to write while making enough money to support myself. After quitting my job, I initially struggled to find work or confidence. Eventually, I started writing on Medium, and within six months, I fell in love with the process of sharing my experiences. I realized I didn’t want to be a marketer; I wanted to be a writer.

This is the life I envisioned. I write what I love, share it with those I care about, and it allows me to earn a living. It’s intriguing to think about what could have happened if I hadn’t asked myself that pivotal question. Had I followed societal expectations, I would still be lamenting my job and life choices. Instead, I find joy and contentment in my current path.

Chapter 2: Shifting Your Perspective on Life

Now, let me pose a question to you: what are you working toward? Are you chasing your dream life, or are you simply laboring toward a life you detest?

Is there no joy for those who lack a passion? Society makes us believe that if you don't have a passion, you’re wasting your life. But hear me out: life is not solely about work. Work is a social construct designed to help us earn a living. While some may find fulfilling careers, others might not.

This doesn't mean those without a clear passion are wasting their lives. Instead of seeking a job you love, focus on learning to appreciate what you do. Life isn't short; it’s abundant. Each day offers a blank page, and you can craft any narrative you wish.

Do you really want to tell a story where the protagonist (you) is perpetually unhappy? Or would you rather pause and think, "What can I do today to live beautifully?" If you find yourself in a job you dislike, rather than trudging through each day with resentment, consider steering your story in a new direction.

For instance, you could wake up an hour earlier to engage in something you love, setting a positive tone for your day. Whether it's reading a book, going for a run, or simply enjoying a quiet cup of coffee, you can choose to embrace your life. Arrive at work on time to avoid unnecessary stress and start each day with the mindset that this is your life—why not enjoy it?

You can leave work early to spend quality time with loved ones, cook for yourself while listening to your favorite music, or even learn a new skill to enhance your professional capabilities.

While I can’t see your unique challenges, I can confidently say that it’s far more difficult to continue disliking your life until the end than it is to seek joy in the present. Life is vast, and we should learn to embrace it by incorporating new habits, hobbies, and relationships that bring us happiness. If you fixate on why your life is unsatisfactory, you will find more reasons to feel discontent. Conversely, if you focus on learning to appreciate your current situation, you will always have reasons to be grateful.

Conclusion: Embrace Your Freedom

Sometimes I feel like I’m channeling the wisdom of an elder. After all, older generations often have valuable insights to share. So, consider this article a gentle reminder: "No, you don’t have to live this life; you have the power to design your dream life."
