# Transformative Tech Apprenticeships Diminishing the College Degree Barrier

Written on

Chapter 1: The Shift in Tech Employment Landscape

Opportunities at leading tech firms like Google, Meta, and LinkedIn remain highly coveted due to their generous compensation for exceptional talent. However, for the 68% of Americans lacking a bachelor’s degree, securing a role at these companies can feel nearly impossible. The absence of a prestigious network further complicates the situation, creating a significant equity gap that prevents capable individuals from being considered for these high-value roles.

Fortunately, the landscape is evolving. An increasing number of organizations are now providing non-traditional candidates and career-changers the chance to acquire essential skills to enter the tech workforce—often while earning a salary. These initiatives are pivotal in leveling the playing field for those unable to pursue a four-year college education or those eager to transition into tech.

Below, I’ve compiled a list of ten leading apprenticeships that can help you embark on this journey, along with a resource document to assist in finding the best fit for your aspirations.

Section 1.1: Accenture

Accenture offers an apprenticeship program that allows participants to "earn while they learn," providing full-time salaries, comprehensive training, and hands-on experience within an Accenture team. This initiative specifically targets individuals without a four-year degree who possess a strong interest in technology and wish to develop programming skills in a supportive environment. Apprentices will contribute to app development and can apply for permanent positions upon completing the program.

Section 1.2: Amazon

Amazon presents an accelerated engineering apprenticeship tailored for U.S. veterans and military spouses. Accepted candidates undergo 18 weeks of structured IT training, followed by practical on-the-job experience, aiming for a full-time Software Development Engineer (SDE) role post-completion. The eligibility criteria for Amazon's program are notably stringent, requiring either a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field or equivalent experience.

Section 1.3: Google

Google's apprenticeship program features various tracks, including data analytics, digital marketing, IT, project management, software engineering, and UX design. Most apprenticeships last 20 months, with the IT track spanning just 12 months. Participants earn a full-time salary while balancing formal training and practical experience with a Google team. Upon successful completion, apprentices receive a nationally recognized credential from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Section 1.4: IBM

IBM's Software Engineering Apprenticeship is ideal for individuals with basic coding skills who wish to enhance their development within a major tech organization. The program combines structured learning with on-the-job training, allowing participants to progress at their own pace, with an estimated completion time of around 12 months. Graduates become eligible for full-time roles at IBM.

Section 1.5: LinkedIn

LinkedIn's REACH program is designed for enthusiastic individuals eager to acquire the technical expertise necessary for their desired careers. While entry barriers are low, candidates should prepare for a rigorous journey, typically lasting from one to five years, as they engage in specialized projects aimed at securing full-time roles as engineers, data scientists, program managers, or UX researchers.

Section 1.6: Meta (Facebook)

Meta offers a Rotating Product Manager program that welcomes candidates from non-technical backgrounds. This unique opportunity enables apprentices to rotate through three different teams over 18 months, ultimately aiming for a full-time Product Manager position. Meta is particularly interested in individuals with strong analytical and problem-solving skills who are drawn to remote work.

Section 1.7: Microsoft

Microsoft's Leap Program boasts a diverse range of tracks, including business program management, cybersecurity engineering, data analytics, software engineering, and UX design. While some tracks are location-specific, the program is notably shorter than others, lasting just 16 weeks and combining classroom instruction with hands-on experience.

Section 1.8: Pinterest

Pinterest divides its apprenticeship offerings into two programs: the Engineering Program, for aspiring software engineers, and the Products Program, for those interested in product management, design, or UX research. Apprenticeships can extend up to one year, with opportunities for participants to transition into full-time roles. Each apprentice is assigned a dedicated mentor for guidance.

Section 1.9: Twitch

Twitch's Data Science Apprenticeship Program is tailored for those focused on data science and analytics. While some technical knowledge of SQL and Python is necessary, Twitch collaborates with Onramp to provide training for candidates to enhance their interview skills.

Section 1.10: Twitter

Twitter’s engineering apprenticeship spans one year and offers full-time employee benefits, mentorship, and the expectation of integrating into a full-time engineering team upon completion. No formal computer science education is required, but applicants should demonstrate proficiency in at least one programming language and a keen interest in various tech platforms. The application process includes a HackerRank Challenge and a final technical interview, so candidates should prepare accordingly.
