Circumbinary Planets: A Celestial Marvel

Circumbinary planets, often referred to as Tatooine planets—named after the iconic world from the "Star Wars" series—are a captivating category of exoplanets that orbit two stars within a binary star system. Unlike the planets in our solar system, which revolve around a single star, circumbinary planets exhibit a more intricate orbital behavior.

In these systems, two stars orbit around a shared center of mass, while the circumbinary planet orbits this center, maintaining a stable gravitational relationship with both stars. This dual gravitational influence can create challenges for the planets, leading to potentially unstable orbits.

Notably, binary star systems are quite common in the Milky Way galaxy, with about half of the stars similar to our Sun existing in such configurations. However, until recently, only one binary system had been confirmed to host multiple planets.

A Spectacular Celestial Event

Astronomers serendipitously observed a rare seven-year eclipse involving the star Gaia17bpp as it emerged from this event.

The Kepler-47 system, located around 5,000 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus, serves as a stunning example of a multi-planetary circumbinary system, housing three known planets: Kepler-47 b, d, and c. Another intriguing binary system, TOI-1338, is found approximately 1,320 light-years away in the Pictor constellation. NASA’s TESS space telescope first identified TOI-1338b, a circumbinary planet, in 2020.

“Circumbinary planets were once thought to be impossible, as the binary stars disrupt the planet-forming disks, creating an inhospitable environment. The discovery of Kepler-16b in 2011 changed that perception,” said Matthew Standing, the study’s lead author.

Utilizing advanced tools from the European Southern Observatory and the Very Large Telescope in Chile’s Atacama Desert, astronomers aimed to determine the mass of TOI-1338b. Instead, they stumbled upon an unexpected find—a second planet, named BEBOP-1c, in honor of the project Binaries Escorted By Orbiting Planets. This gas giant has a mass roughly 65 times that of Earth, yet is about five times less massive than Jupiter, orbiting its stellar companions at a distance of approximately 79% of an astronomical unit (AU).

BEBOP-1c orbits its twin suns in roughly 215 days, while TOI-1338b, located about 46% of an AU away, completes its orbit in around 95 days. Scientists estimate TOI-1338b's mass to be no more than 22 times that of Earth, adding to the intrigue of this alien system.

Exploring New Frontiers in Astronomy

Researchers assert that previous discoveries of circumbinary planets relied heavily on costly space telescopes like Kepler and TESS, which have budgets in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The recent breakthrough suggests that ground-based telescopes, combined with the radial-velocity technique, can successfully detect such planets, given meticulous planning and careful target selection. However, this method presents challenges due to the combined light from both stars, complicating the collection of accurate motion data.

To date, the TOI-1338/BEBOP-1 system has revealed only two known planets, but scientists express optimism for further discoveries in the future. Ongoing research aims to confirm the size of BEBOP-1c and ascertain the mass of TOI-1338b. Another critical aspect of future studies involves analyzing the atmospheric chemistry of circumbinary planets and comparing them to those orbiting single stars. This line of investigation promises to deepen our understanding of these extraordinary celestial bodies. The Webb telescope is ideally suited for such observations.

The complete research findings were published in the Journal of Nature Astronomy.
