Chapter 1: What is Motivation?

What does the term "motivation" signify for you? Many people struggle to find inspiration and sustain their drive over time.

Cherry Blossoms in Bloom

When pondering the meaning of motivation, you might find yourself asking questions like, “Do I truly believe in motivation?” or “Is motivation essential for me to reach my personal and professional aspirations?” In other words, do you think motivation is necessary for success?

Motivation can be defined as “a force that propels a person to act” or “a means of providing a reason to act.” It can manifest in various forms, some of which may be familiar to you, while others might be new.

In addition to inspiration and zeal, motivation can also be described using terms like incentive, drive, and enthusiasm. Do any of these resonate with you? If not, it may indicate that you require more motivation than you realize.

Some individuals seem to possess an innate drive, waking each morning with a vibrant energy that can make others feel sluggish as they sip their morning coffee. They dive into tasks with enthusiasm and seem to maintain a boundless energy throughout the day, tackling one project after another. Watching from the sidelines, you might experience emotions ranging from admiration to self-doubt.

Conversely, you might identify as someone who takes longer to get started, and from that point, it only becomes harder to gain momentum. If you could just find the motivation to begin, you might perform as well as those around you.

As you witness others racing ahead and completing tasks while you remain at the starting line, feelings of sadness may creep in. It’s often said that a lack of motivation is linked to feelings of depression.

Individuals who are motivated generally experience fewer depressive episodes and are less likely to feel overwhelmed or fall behind. You may sometimes experience brief bursts of motivation, but when challenges arise, maintaining interest can be tough. This phenomenon occurs not only in your professional endeavors but also in your personal pursuits.

Most people who are driven in their personal lives find it easier to maintain that same enthusiasm at work. If you believe that qualities like success, excitement, and passion fuel motivation, you may be onto something. Do you face daily responsibilities with eagerness, or do you slog through them, only feeling joy once they’re completed?

Perhaps you’ve uncovered the key to sparking your motivation. There are numerous ways to cultivate motivation, but few things inspire like the feeling of accomplishment. This doesn’t necessarily mean achieving something grand, like winning an election or taking first place; success can take many forms.

For instance, if you're trying to lose weight and notice the scale dropping week after week, that progress can fuel your motivation to keep going. Similarly, successfully closing a sale after numerous attempts can drive you to make even more calls, fueled by the satisfaction of achievement.

While some people may be naturally motivated, it’s important to remember that motivation is also a skill that can be developed.
