Daily Meeting Challenges: Learning from Mistakes

Chapter 1: The Incident
Recently, I found myself in a challenging situation during our daily quality meeting at 8:30 a.m. My emotions got the better of me, to say the least.
"What is happening in that department?!?!" I exclaimed after discovering yet another quality issue with a product we had produced reliably for years. The new defects were piling up, and I couldn’t understand why the Leaders or Coordinators were unaware when we inquired.
In retrospect, it was far from my best moment—a significant misstep that strayed from my usual approach.
The following morning, I had a conversation with my boss. To my surprise, he handled it with remarkable grace. He recognized the pressure I was under to meet our key performance indicators (KPIs), yet he emphasized that my reaction was uncalled for. Yelling does not foster effective leadership. We both understood the need for improvement.
His feedback was invaluable. Surprisingly, he also took some responsibility for not intervening during the meeting. He admitted that reacting in the moment can be challenging for him, as he prefers to take time to think and reflect.
"That's a positive trait," I reassured him. "At least you’re not impulsive like I can be at times."
He noted that while passion can be beneficial, it’s essential for us to strive for better conduct. At our next meeting, both of us apologized to the team—he for not guiding the discussion and I for losing my temper.
We encouraged the team to prepare for the daily quality huddle by bringing examples of any issues and to continue collaborating to address challenges effectively, something we excel at as a group.
The key takeaway? Everyone makes mistakes. If you haven’t encountered a setback yet, you will—it’s unavoidable. When it happens, own up to it, apologize, and commit to improvement.
