The AssangeDAO was established with the aim of assisting Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, in his legal battle against extradition to the United States. This innovative organization has successfully gathered over $53 million, utilizing blockchain technology to facilitate fundraising efforts.

This funding, amounting to 17,422 Ether, is dedicated to supporting Assange's fight against extradition, where he faces a potential sentence of up to 175 years in prison. As noted on the DAO's website, "By mobilizing the network of solidarity with Assange, we hope to send a powerful signal that the time for passivity has ended. A new era of cypherpunk organizing has begun."

Shortly after the DAO's inception, Gabriel Shipton, Assange's brother, became involved. He collaborated with digital artist Pak to create an NFT collection aimed at raising additional funds. This model draws inspiration from Ross Ulbricht, the Silk Road founder, who previously raised $12 million through an NFT initiative with the FreeRossDAO.

Chapter 2: The Role of NFTs in Fundraising

Assange and Pak introduced two distinct types of NFTs under the title "Censored." The first allows public contributions through submitted text that is visually represented as crossed-out images. These creations can be viewed on platforms like OpenSea.

The second NFT is a digital clock displaying the number of days Assange has been imprisoned, which is also available for purchase.

Assange was granted asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London from 2012 until 2019. However, after being arrested in April 2019, he was sentenced to a 50-week prison term for evading justice. Following this period, Assange remained in custody due to the U.S. requesting his extradition.

The indictment against him has ignited international protests. Numerous human rights organizations, including Bärbel Kofler, the former German government's commissioner for human rights policy, have voiced their opposition to Assange's treatment.

Chapter 3: Financial Strategies of AssangeDAO

The AssangeDAO aims to convert words into action by raising substantial financial resources to ensure Assange receives optimal legal representation. Within just one week, the organization amassed an impressive 17,422 Ether, equivalent to $53 million, with contributions from over 10,000 individuals, including Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.

The collected Ether will be transferred to the Wau Holland Foundation, which is responsible for Assange's defense. Meanwhile, the Censored NFT collection has raised 670 Ether, equating to approximately $2.1 million, which will be allocated to various human rights, digital privacy, and education organizations.

The DAO operates on the JuiceBox protocol, allowing contributors to receive $JUSTICE tokens based on their donations. These tokens grant holders voting rights in DAO decisions, reflecting a community-driven governance model.

The DAO manages its finances through a multisig address, with keys held by notable figures within the cryptocurrency community. The funds raised will primarily be used to bid on the NFT clock, which will now be housed in the DAO's multisig wallet.
