Chapter 1: Bookish Reflections

It's time for another round of book-related questions! Currently, I'm juggling two reads, so I don't have a review ready just yet. In the meantime, here’s my Q&A inspired by a blog I found.

What was the last book you read?

The most recent book I completed was Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus.

Was it a good one?

It had its moments, but the protagonist often made it challenging to fully enjoy the experience.

What made it good?

I appreciated the chemistry elements and the cooking class scenes.

Would you recommend it to others?

Probably not, unless one enjoys pretentious literature. Its reviews are quite mixed, so it really depends on individual taste.

How often do you read?

I aim to read daily.

Do you enjoy reading?

Absolutely! Why else would I be discussing books?

What was the last disappointing book you read?

While Lessons in Chemistry wasn't entirely bad, it was close. I'm currently reading another book that may end up on my "disappointing reads" list.

What turned you off?

The main character in Lessons in Chemistry comes off as snobbish, often looking down on others.

Do you aspire to be a writer?

I once dreamed of writing novels, but now I find joy in blogging and making a bit of extra income.

Which books have had a significant impact on you?

Never Let Me Go, One Day, and Eat Pray Love are among those that immediately come to mind.

Do you read fan fiction?

I did during high school, but I don't read it much anymore.

Have you ever written fan fiction?

Yes, I wrote some in my high school days.

What’s your favorite book?

My go-to is Cold Mountain, though I haven't found a recent favorite. Perhaps Me Before You fits the bill.

What’s your least favorite book?

I’m not a fan of most of Colleen Hoover's work, particularly Verity.

Do you prefer physical books or e-readers?

I enjoy both formats.

When did you learn to read?

I learned in first grade.

What was your favorite book assigned in school?

In high school, I enjoyed Tess of the D'Ubervilles, and in college, I liked Catcher in the Rye and To Kill a Mockingbird.

What’s your favorite book series?

A Song of Ice and Fire (or Game of Thrones for the TV fans).

Who is your current favorite author?

I don’t have a specific favorite author at the moment.

What’s your preferred genre?

I love historical fiction and literary works, and I'm starting to explore nonfiction.

Who is your favorite character from a series?

Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones is a favorite; he seems to resonate with many readers.

Has a book ever taken you to another world?

I tend to get deeply involved in stories, but I can’t recall the last time a book truly transported me. Perhaps during my high school or college years.

What book do you wish had a sequel?

I would love to see a sequel for Cold Mountain to explore Ada’s life post-war with her daughter. Despite not liking Verity, I wish it had a follow-up to clarify who the real antagonist was.

Which book do you wish had never been continued?

Me Before You has two sequels. I enjoyed the third installment, Still Me, but I found the one right after Me Before You (titled After You) lacking the initial magic, even though I understand the character's actions.

How long does it typically take you to finish a book?

It varies; some books I breeze through while others take more time.

Which movie adaptation do you think captured its book well?

The film adaptation of Cold Mountain, featuring Nicole Kidman and Jude Law, was exceptional and inspired me to read the book. It truly impacted my life.

Do you read newspapers?

Not frequently, unless an intriguing article catches my attention.

Do you read magazines?

Occasionally, especially if they cover topics or people I find interesting, like the royal family or favorite actors.

Do you prefer newspapers or magazines?

I don't have a strong preference, but I lean toward magazines.

Do you read in bed?

Yes, it’s more comfortable that way.

Do you read while using the restroom?

Sometimes, especially if I expect to be there for a while.

Do you read while traveling in a vehicle?

I used to do that.

Have you ever read in the bathtub?

I don’t soak often, but I have done it a few times.

Are you a fast reader?

Compared to others, I think I am, but it depends on the book.

Are you a slow reader?

That depends too; if a book is lengthy or unengaging, it takes me longer to finish.

Where do you prefer to read?

On the couch or in bed.

Is it tough for you to focus while reading?

It can be, depending on what’s happening in my life.

Do you need silence to read?

Yes, distractions like noise and music can pull me out of the experience.

Who inspired your love for reading?

My parents played a significant role in fostering my interest.

What book is next on your reading list?

I’m not certain yet; I’ll likely pick something that piques my interest next, maybe a thriller or a true crime novel.

When did you start reading chapter books?

I believe it was in first or second grade, though I can't recall the exact timing.

Who is your favorite children’s book author?

Roald Dahl, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and L.M. Montgomery are among my favorites.

Which author would you love to interview?

I have a long list, but I’d especially enjoy chatting with Stephen King due to his amusing dry humor in interviews.

Which author do you think you'd get along with?

I’m unsure; I don’t follow many authors on social media to avoid potential disappointments regarding their personalities.

What book have you read the most?

Most likely the Harry Potter series, along with Me Before You and Water for Elephants.

Which books do you consider "classics"?

I think Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings will be regarded as classics.

Which books do you believe should be taught in every school?

To Kill a Mockingbird is a must-read in educational settings.

Which books do you think should be banned from schools?

I don’t support banning books; students should have access to all literature, though some may be more suitable for different age groups. Ultimately, libraries should provide a diverse range of books for students to explore.
