Finding Authenticity Through Counseling: A Personal Journey

Chapter 1: The End of One Journey, The Beginning of Another

Counseling is a transformative experience, often viewed as a complete phase in one’s life. However, it’s essential to recognize that the process of healing is ongoing. I recently wrapped up my counseling sessions, which brought me to a significant realization: recovery is not merely a destination, but a lifelong journey.

During my initial appointment, my counselor presented me with a series of questions. I did my best to respond with sincerity, revealing the depths of my struggles. It became clear that I was grappling with profound depression, which had taken hold of my life.

Prior to this, I had undergone cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which provided me with invaluable tools. It helped me identify and confront negative thoughts and behaviors as they arose. Yet, I found myself constantly in a reactive mode, always trying to manage crises as they occurred. Counseling offered me a chance to uncover and address the root causes of my issues, aiming to mitigate the need for constant firefighting. Ideally, I wanted to reserve CBT techniques for emergencies rather than relying on them as my primary coping mechanism.

While counseling hasn’t magically resolved every challenge I face, it has offered me a newfound ability to articulate my feelings. It has allowed me to break free from isolation, encouraging me to seek help not just when I'm desperate, but also when I simply need support.

My counselor and I explored significant life events, including the loss of my father to cancer during my youth, my career in nursing, and my complicated relationships with my family and spouse. At the core of my struggles were themes of connection: the absence of relationships and the deterioration of existing ones. I learned that effective communication is vital to mending these bonds—something I had often shied away from out of fear of upsetting others. I had prioritized being strong and pleasing those around me over my own emotional well-being.

For a long time, I believed it was my responsibility to prevent my depression. I often chastised myself for not being stronger, more diligent, or less of a burden to others. But that was a misguided perspective. I now understand that my personality was predisposed to encountering these challenges. I managed to navigate life with underlying depression for 25 years, only realizing the need for change during a crisis that was compounded by a pandemic, losses, family strife, and overwork. Had these events not occurred, I might have continued to drift through life, unaware of the turmoil brewing beneath the surface.

I am a different person now—or perhaps, I am in the process of becoming one. Although I occasionally revert to old behaviors, I recognize when I need to seek assistance. I can apply CBT strategies in challenging moments and understand how to ground myself to avoid spiraling downwards.

Yet, it’s the counseling that has prompted the most profound shifts in my life. I know I will continue to contend with the "Black Dog" of depression, and relapses may be part of my journey. However, I now possess greater awareness of my mental state. I will face uncomfortable moments, but I understand their origins and have the tools for self-care. Most importantly, I have developed self-awareness about my body and mind.

In many respects, I am thankful for the challenges posed by depression. They have taught me about myself and fostered personal growth. Without my breakdown, I would have deceived myself into thinking I was okay, lacking authenticity. Now, when I feel good, it is genuine. When I struggle, that too is real.

This sense of authenticity is what I cherish most from my counseling experience. It has allowed me to embrace who I am, both in my strengths and vulnerabilities. I am becoming a better person, and I hope this journey continues.
