Navigating the iPad Landscape: What to Buy in 2023

Choosing the Right iPad
The current state of iPad offerings can be quite confusing. With varying opinions floating around from so-called industry insiders, it’s hard to know what to believe. Will Apple really wait until 2024 to unveil the next iPad mini or refresh the iPad Air? What about the anticipated M3 chip for the iPad Pro?
I can't provide definitive answers, but I do have some insights and recommendations for your potential iPad purchase this year. Just remember, if Apple drops a new model right after you buy, don’t say I didn’t warn you!
Before diving in, it's worth noting that I've omitted the 9th generation iPad (the one with the physical home button) from my recommendations. This model is a sure bet for those seeking the most budget-friendly option. If that’s your priority, feel free to go ahead and purchase it.
I’m also skipping the 11-inch iPad Pro in my analysis. With the iPad Air consistently encroaching on its territory and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro remaining the flagship model, it’s not an easy recommendation.
The 10th Generation iPad
It’s astonishing that the 10th generation iPad is already nearly a year old. While its modern design and vibrant color choices are appealing, it lacks support for the second-generation Apple Pencil. Additionally, its price escalates quickly once you add accessories. Starting at £499, it’s not exactly a budget option.
Given the competition from the iPad Air, I find it challenging to recommend the 10th generation model.
Should you purchase it this year?
Absolutely not. The more I reflect on this model, the more uncertain I am about its target audience. Plus, there’s a good chance an update will arrive next year to address its current shortcomings.
The iPad Air (5th Generation)
The iPad Air remains one of Apple's standout products, blending high-end functionality with a more accessible price. The 5th generation iPad Air marked a significant advancement as it transitioned from A-series chips to the M1 chip, which has proven to be an excellent choice.
This model delivers Pro-level performance without the additional features that inflate the cost of the iPad Pro series. If you’re not interested in a high refresh-rate display or an advanced camera system, the iPad Air is a fantastic option.
However, keep in mind that it was released in March 2022 and will soon be approaching two years old. An update with a potential M2 chip and ProMotion display could be on the horizon.
Should you buy it in 2023?
If you're not concerned with having the newest model and want a reliable iPad for years to come, the iPad Air is a sweet spot. But if you're hesitant about an upcoming update and don’t have an urgent need, it’s wise to hold off.
The iPad Mini (6th Generation)
Of all the models, the iPad mini is the one I’m most enthusiastic about. The sixth generation is arguably Apple's best offering yet, but it is showing its age, having been released in September 2021.
This model runs on the A15 Bionic chip and features an outdated camera system with limited storage options. There's a growing call for a new iPad mini, and rumors suggest that we might see either a Pro version or a refreshed seventh generation soon.
The potential upgrades, like a desktop-class M-series chip and improved display features, are enticing. However, most speculation indicates we’ll only receive a minor update with an A16 chip and enhanced connectivity.
Should you buy it in 2023?
In a recent back-to-school guide, I recommended the iPad mini for students or anyone needing a tablet right now. For those who can wait, however, I suggest holding off.
The iPad Pro (12.9-inch)
The 12.9-inch M2 iPad Pro will soon celebrate its first birthday. Despite my initial discontent with Apple’s reluctance to utilize the powerful hardware effectively, recent updates have improved the situation significantly.
With the introduction of Apple’s professional apps like Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, the rationale behind the iPad Pro’s capabilities is becoming clear.
Should you buy it in 2023?
While rumors suggest a 2024 update could bring an M3 chip and OLED display, I believe this shouldn’t deter you from purchasing the current iPad Pro if it meets your needs. This device is an outstanding choice that will remain relevant for years.
Conclusion
I concur with Mark Gurman and others—this year doesn’t appear to be a big year for the iPad. This makes purchasing one in 2023 a bit tricky. However, if you have an immediate need, don’t hesitate to buy one. Apple’s tablets are well-crafted, powerful, and worth the investment.
For those keeping an eye on future releases without urgent needs, proceed with caution. I hope my insights help guide your decision-making process!
