Navigating the Nightmare of Follower Counts on Social Media

Chapter 1: The Dream that Shook Me
Last night, I experienced a dream that left me utterly shaken.
Here’s a glimpse into my unsettling experience: I woke up in a cold sweat, my heart racing, unable to fathom what just transpired. In this nightmare, my follower count on Medium plummeted from around 700 to a shocking 14.
This was a jarring blow that left me feeling despondent. All my hard work seemed to vanish in an instant. I had spent months writing daily, only to see it all seemingly wasted.
As I wallowed in despair, I noticed a tweet from someone I follow on Twitter. Although I didn’t know him personally, his brand voice was unmistakable. He posted a harsh reminder: "If you just do it for the followers, don't do it at all."
This stark reality struck a chord with me. It felt like my subconscious was delivering a crucial lesson about the futility of obsessing over follower counts—a game with no endpoint.
Social media, like business, is an "infinite game," as Alex Hormozi describes. Even the highly successful MrBeast, with his 170 million YouTube subscribers, continues to strive for more followers, indicating that the quest for recognition is unending.
In reality, the pursuit of followers is a hollow objective. Ironically, my growth on Medium has been the strongest among the platforms I use, while Twitter has frustrated me.
I've watched others leap from zero to 9,000 followers in mere months, while I’ve been consistently active since January and haven’t even hit 300. This disparity has fueled my doubts.
Is my energy better spent elsewhere? Is all this effort yielding any results? Should I abandon this path altogether?
The answer isn't straightforward. If my primary goal was to accumulate followers, then yes, focusing more on Twitter would be logical. However, that's not my true ambition.
As my profile indicates, my aim is to achieve digital leverage. I need a long-term strategy to establish my presence across all platforms. The objective should not just be reaching a milestone of 1,000 followers in six months but rather building a dedicated community that values my insights.
In today’s attention economy, those who master the art of engagement will reap substantial rewards.
So, thank you, subconscious, for your insightful guidance. Don’t let follower counts discourage you; keep your broader goals in sight, and everything else will follow suit.
I hope this resonates with you,
-Godfrey
