Overcoming Fear of Mice: Insights and Strategies

Chapter 1: Understanding the Fear of Mice
Recently, I had an unsettling encounter with a mouse—small, gray, and utterly repulsive. It scurried across my gas stove, testing my composure. I could only let out a faint squeak of fright. This sensation was so distasteful that I struggled to find a comparison; it felt dirty and deeply uncomfortable. I can't recall ever reacting to anything else in such a way.
Interestingly, mice are naturally inclined towards cleanliness. They avoid dirty bedding in their nests, opting to leave and create a new one if they find it contaminated.
The current year seems to have a peculiar association with rodents, possibly reflecting the Eastern zodiac's Year of the Rat, which is characterized as white and metal. Perhaps this mouse was a symbolic farewell as the year draws to a close. They are incredibly swift creatures, capable of reaching speeds of up to 13 km/h.
A quick search revealed that I am not alone in my fear; many people, particularly women, have harbored a profound, instinctual dread of rodents, snakes, and spiders for ages. Historically, these animals posed serious health risks to humans, and even though such dangers have diminished with societal progress, the primal fear persists.
It's essential to view mice from a broader perspective. Like all creatures, they have their challenges. For instance, they require approximately 3 ml of water daily; without it, they succumb to dehydration within two weeks. Moreover, their food sources—seeds and vegetables—are not always accessible in human households. I once had a mouse in my country house that resorted to eating soap, and surprisingly, its favorite food was peanut butter, more so than cheese.
There are numerous fascinating facts about mice. For example, one can recall the iconic character Mickey Mouse, who played a role in helping Americans identify German spies during World War II.
In the scientific community, laboratory mice have been indispensable. As a tribute to their contributions, a monument created by artist Andrei Kharkevich stands in Novosibirsk. Additionally, the "Methuselah Mouse Prize," which awards millions to scientists researching lifespan extension through studies on mice, highlights their significance in advancing human health.
