# Embrace Your Multipassionate Nature: No Need for a Niche

Written on

Chapter 1: The Pressure to Choose a Niche

Many voices in the creator community insist that selecting a niche is essential for success. This advice echoes across platforms like Medium, Twitter (now X), and LinkedIn, where the mantra "Pick a Niche!" is often repeated.

However, as someone who is still navigating the early stages of my creative journey, I find myself grappling with a different reality. The truth is, I struggle to define a niche. My interests span a wide array, including personal development, travel, politics, global issues, and even human spaceflight.

One moment, I’m engrossed in discussing Ethiopia’s quest for maritime access; the next, I’m reflecting on how travel has reshaped my worldview or how advancements in space travel are on the horizon.

It's easy to feel overwhelmed by these diverse passions.

The Multipassionate Creator Concept

I once believed that having multiple interests was a disadvantage in the creative realm. But then I encountered the concept introduced by Jerine Nicole, a part-time nurse and writer, who advocates for the idea of the "multipassionate creator."

Multipassionate creator concept

Being multipassionate is simply a way to describe individuals who thrive on exploring and discussing a variety of subjects. While some, like Tanya Dalton, argue that this inclination may be a form of procrastination, I believe it reflects a genuine curiosity about the world.

Yes, in some instances, it can lead to what Tanya calls "shiny object syndrome." For example, one might aspire to write but then feel drawn to learn the guitar or explore cryptocurrency. Yet, who am I to judge? I can be the king of procrastination myself!

Yet for those of us just starting out, embracing our multipassionate nature is vital.

Section 1.1: Breaking Free from Limitations

For a year and a half, I confined myself to writing a somewhat focused newsletter on intentional living, often stifling my other interests. I believed I couldn't incorporate them into my niche, leading to the unsuccessful launch of several newsletters on disparate topics.

Eventually, I decided to break free from that limitation. I rebranded my newsletter as "The Multipassionaut," where I now explore a variety of subjects—from personal growth and cultural exploration to the exciting future of human space exploration.

Am I confident in this new approach? Absolutely! It may take longer to find my audience compared to those with a defined niche, but I’m unconcerned.

Perhaps my unique blend of interests and perspective is, in itself, my niche. However, I prefer to think of it as simply being me.

Section 1.2: The Power of Personality

In today’s saturated online landscape, people gravitate towards authentic personalities. A great example is Johnny Harris, a successful independent journalist on YouTube. His unique voice and broad topic range keep viewers engaged, regardless of the subject matter.

Jerine Nicole emphasizes, “Being a multipassionate creator is a superpower because no one else can replicate what you do.”

So, to my fellow generalists and multipassionate creators: release the constraints! Embrace your diverse interests. Your uniqueness is a strength, and the world is eager to witness it.

Of course, persistence and self-belief are crucial (I know, it sounds cliché). Your success won’t come from the typical "niched" productivity tips, but rather from your creativity and passion.

In writing this, I remind myself as much as anyone else. We all need this encouragement.
