Creating a Structured Routine When Every Day Feels Like the Weekend
Written on
Chapter 1: Embracing a Routine
As a full-time entrepreneur working from home, I often feel like my days blend together, resembling an endless weekend. Am I the only one experiencing this?
This sensation didn't hit me until a few years after I transitioned to running my business full-time. Initially, I juggled my entrepreneurial journey alongside a 9-to-5 job. Once my business surpassed my corporate salary, I decided to dive in completely, which was nearly a decade ago.
In the early years of being a full-time business owner, my routine was quite rigid and well-structured. Since it was my own schedule, I enjoyed the autonomy—taking breaks, having flexibility, and working comfortably in cozy socks on my couch with my laptop. This setup was certainly more appealing than being micromanaged in a corporate environment.
However, as time passed, my schedule became increasingly relaxed. This shift gave rise to that familiar "Saturday feeling," where every day started to blur into the next. While this might seem pleasant at first glance, it presents significant challenges. Here’s how I navigate this situation.
Section 1.1: Designing Your Ideal Routine
Your ideal routine is uniquely yours. The key is to establish a consistent routine that enhances productivity, allows you to accomplish more, and brings joy back into your week. By structuring your workday around this routine, you'll differentiate between weekdays and weekends once again.
Subsection 1.1.1: Adapting Your Routine
My routine is not static; it evolves over time. For instance, when summer vacation begins, my school-aged son is at home, necessitating adjustments to my schedule. Changes may also arise due to significant projects, my husband's work commitments, or other factors. Flexibility is essential in business, and I'm comfortable with modifying my routine periodically.
Section 1.2: Implementing Time Management Techniques
To maintain focus, I utilize the Pomodoro technique. Essentially, this involves setting a timer for 25 minutes, during which I concentrate solely on work. After the timer goes off, I take a short break before repeating the cycle. Prior to adopting this method, I found myself distracted by my phone, emails, the TV, and other interruptions. Now, this structured approach enables me to stay on task and be far more productive.
Chapter 2: Rewarding Yourself

Rewarding myself is a practice I cherish. Tying incentives to achievements can be incredibly motivating. A former client often surprised me with $50 Amazon gift cards as a token of appreciation for a job well done. Now, I adopt this strategy for myself—treating myself to a small gift, a sweet from my favorite bakery, or even a relaxing day out. Customize this reward system to align with your preferences.
Section 2.1: Establishing Sleep Patterns
Maintaining consistent wake-up and sleep times during the workweek is crucial. While weekends often invite late mornings and flexible bedtimes, this lack of structure can lead to a sense of monotony. I now stick to a regular schedule during weekdays, while still enjoying the freedom to sleep in on weekends.
What’s Next?
This journey is ongoing. The small adjustments I've made have significantly improved my routine, but there is still work to be done. I continue to enforce these guidelines and seek new ways to create structure, allowing for a flexible work routine.
