Finding Freedom in Rest: Overcoming Guilt Around Taking Breaks

Written on

The Necessity of Rest

I often emphasize the significance of rest and the importance of not feeling guilty about needing it. However, I find it challenging to adhere to my own advice at times. It often takes an exhaustive push to my limits before I finally reach a point where I can no longer function.

Just yesterday, I faced an overwhelming sense of burnout that struck me with unexpected severity. The struggle to even move was palpable, let alone accomplish anything else. Despite noticing the early signs of burnout, I dismissed them, convincing myself that my mind was simply trying to make me "lazy."

Eventually, I could no longer ignore the urgent need for rest and had no choice but to come to a complete halt.

Failing to listen to our bodies can prevent us from addressing issues before they escalate, a mistake I found myself making. The consequences of skipping rest manifested in various ways:

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Increased anxiety levels
  • Insomnia
  • Physical weakness

When I evaluate this list, it’s clear that the stress of not taking breaks far outweighs any temporary productivity. Yet, when I'm in the zone, it rarely feels that way.

Understanding Guilt Surrounding Rest

The pervasive guilt associated with taking breaks largely stems from our societal environment, which significantly influences our mindset. We are bombarded with messages about relentless hustle and pushing ourselves to achieve goals, making it difficult to view rest as anything but a weakness.

When our minds and bodies signal the need for a break, we often interpret it as a failure. Statements like "you can rest when you're dead" only exacerbate this issue.

Moreover, the impact of social media algorithms can further discourage us from stepping back, as we may experience a drop in engagement or visibility during a break from posting. I've encountered several articles on Medium discussing how writers noticed declines in views and earnings after taking a break from their craft.

The Crucial Role of Rest

It's no surprise that we feel compelled to keep pushing forward, even when we’re not at our best. However, this tendency leads to chronic stress and fatigue, ultimately harming our health and diminishing the quality of our lives.

Understanding the importance of rest is one thing; actually embracing it without guilt is another. Developing this mindset requires both practice and patience.

We must learn to be kind to ourselves, allowing our minds and bodies the rejuvenation they deserve. Ignoring this need is a disservice to ourselves.

From personal experience with exhaustion, I can affirm that ignoring the call for rest is simply not worth it. I hope this message encourages anyone who has been overworking to take a step back and recognize that it's perfectly acceptable to do so.

Taking a break does not equate to laziness. Instead, it honors the needs of your mind, body, and spirit, ultimately benefiting your future self.
