# Stepping Away: My 30-Day Social Media Detox Experience

Written on

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Disconnecting

In today's world, individuals often spend over three and a half hours daily on their smartphones, with a significant portion dedicated to social media platforms.

One question arises: what advantages might you gain from taking a break from social media? Could it lead to increased productivity? Enhanced focus? How might your daily life be altered? As someone who creates content and relies on an audience, I was curious: is social media essential for growing and maintaining a business? To answer these questions, I decided to embark on a 30-day hiatus from social media.

Initially, the first few days were the toughest. Aware that I could easily revert to my old habits, I took drastic steps to curb my phone usage. I removed all social media applications from my phone, logged out of my accounts on my computer, and cleared my browser history to create an extra barrier.

However, I soon realized that the real struggle came from my ingrained habit of compulsively checking my device. It wasn't the content itself that I was addicted to; rather, it was the anticipation of potential messages or likes that kept drawing me back. Perhaps a client had replied, or maybe one of my posts had gained traction. The excitement of the "what if" was hard to shake off.

To create some distance, I started leaving my phone in the bedroom while I worked and, whenever possible, I kept it at home when I stepped out. You know that classic habit of checking your phone, wallet, and keys before leaving the house? I transformed it into a simple routine: just my wallet and keys. After a week, I found myself adjusting to life without my phone, and it no longer felt odd to leave home without it.

Section 1.1: The Impact of Social Media

There are numerous reasons one might consider a break from social media. The effects can vary for each person, but I believe there are three predominant reasons that resonate with many:

  1. Comparison Trap: Platforms like Instagram often lead to unhealthy comparisons. Constant exposure to others' lives can make you yearn for what they have.
  2. Addiction to Feedback: Studies have shown that some individuals would rather endure mild electric shocks than spend 15 minutes alone with their thoughts. Social media can provide a false sense of connection while simultaneously overwhelming our minds, draining our time, and hampering productivity.
  3. Distraction Overload: As I began my 30-day detox, I had no intention of stopping my posts entirely. Initially, I thought the negative impacts stemmed solely from comparison and time wasted on distractions. I wanted to see if I could still engage with my audience without direct interaction through a third-party app.

But was I merely justifying my habits? Did I genuinely believe that stepping away would cause my world to crumble and that my audience would vanish? Perhaps a bit of both. Here’s what I discovered.

After the first couple of weeks, I shared some photos and tweets, but once I interrupted the feedback cycle, my motivation dwindled, and I ceased posting. I continued to upload videos to YouTube, which felt less addictive and more like a blog. However, I still found myself instinctively reaching for my phone, only to remember that I had deleted all social media apps. My screen time decreased significantly, averaging just 23 minutes daily, compared to 98 minutes the prior month.

Section 1.2: Reassessing Priorities

Have you ever used the excuse, "I don't have enough time for ____"? I certainly have. Whether it’s reading more, exercising, or starting a new venture, we often blame a lack of time. However, it may be more about aligning our priorities. Identifying what truly matters in your life requires eliminating distractions, and for me, that meant distancing myself from social media.

As for my business, did things slow down? Surprisingly, halfway through my detox, I experienced the most significant increase in YouTube subscribers that I had ever seen. I even reached YouTube's trending page as a rising creator, gaining over 124,000 subscribers during the 30 days. The traffic surge came from a video titled "A Day in the Life of a Minimalist," which amassed 3 million views within ten days.

Regarding revenue, I also saw a notable rise in Patreon supporters, which allows me to keep my YouTube channel ad-free by providing exclusive content. In the same month I quit social media, I witnessed extraordinary growth in my audience. While it may have been coincidental, it made me question why I spent so much time on social media when my true passion lies in filmmaking.

Chapter 2: Productivity Beyond Social Media

Seth Godin penned an insightful piece titled "Social media is a symptom, not a tactic," where he noted that while icons like the Mona Lisa have a vast online presence, they do not rely on social media for their significance. The allure of social media can be misleading, much like spending excessive time deliberating over minor decisions.

With the time I reclaimed, I became more productive, allowing me to either create more content or take time off to be with family, which is what I chose to do during a recent visit home. My nephew Oliver was thrilled with my drone, reminding me that productivity isn't solely about output.

Taking a break from constant checking provided a sense of clarity that is hard to define but undeniably positive. Upon reconnecting, I realized that I had not missed anything significant. Moving forward, as I continue my journey as a solo creator with limited hours each day, I am reconsidering how I allocate my time.
